The exam at a glance

  • The Royal College of Pathologists' practical exam, sat over two days.
  • Six components: surgical histology, non-gynaecological cytopathology, long cases, frozen sections, macroscopic specimens and OSPEs.
  • Written reports on slides, plus spoken answers to the surgeon and the examiners.
  • Marked against model answers. A benign/malignant error counts heavily and can fail the section.
Official format: RCPath: examination regulations (opens in a new tab)

What you get

What Exameds gives you for FRCPath Histopathology Part 2

  • Real histology slides to pan and zoom, with a report form under the real headings.
  • Every report marked straight away, section by section against a model answer, with the reasoning shown.
  • Dangerous errors flagged: a benign/malignant miss is called out, as in the real exam.
  • Frozen sections: the surgeon rings from theatre. Give your call by voice or text and the Virtual Examiner marks it.
  • Macros and OSPE 1 as conversations with the Virtual Examiner, including where you would take your blocks. OSPE 2 written and marked.
  • Long cases with immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy to interpret. Timed mocks for the written components.

Vivas, out loud

The examiner talks to you

Theatre 3 callingFrozen section · Mr Okafor, breast surgeon

Frozen section on the 2 cm breast lesion. What are you seeing?

Invasive carcinoma, no special type. I'd like paraffin sections before I commit on grade.

Understood. Anything on margins?

Virtual Examiner

DiagnosisCorrect, with the right caution
MarginsNot volunteered before the surgeon asked
  • Frozen sections: the phone rings, the surgeon asks, you answer by voice or text. What they ask next depends on your answer.
  • Macros: discuss the specimen with the Virtual Examiner, including where you would take your blocks.
  • OSPE 1 as a discussion, OSPE 2 written, both marked against a model answer.
  • Every viva marked point by point, with how a strong candidate would handle it.

Checked by a doctor

Every case, checked against current UK guidance

Original cases written to the published curriculum. Nothing copied from past papers or other banks.

  • A doctor checks every case against RCPath datasets and the WHO classification before it goes live.
  • Every explanation names the guideline it comes from.
  • Spot something wrong? Report any case in one tap and we look at it.
  • Exam preparation, not clinical guidance.

Questions

Are the slides real?
Yes. They're real histology photographs shared by pathologists on Wikimedia Commons under open licences, at low and high power, and each is credited. RCPath's own slides are confidential, so every case is original.
How is my report marked?
AI marks each section against a model answer and shows its reasoning point by point. A benign/malignant error is flagged, because in the real exam it fails the section. AI can make mistakes, so you can report any mark.
Does it follow the current exam format?
It follows the RCPath histopathology regulations for 2026: surgical histology, cytopathology, long cases, frozen sections, macros and OSPEs. We'll update it when the College publishes a new format.

Exameds is exam preparation, not clinical guidance, and is not endorsed by the Royal College of Pathologists.
